Re: [udig-devel] render performance

The set up in use is a Tohiba Qosmio with 2G memory 1.7 processor very similar to the Dell you described, same graphics setup. I have tried with an instrumented udig geotools derived from svn tag and with the udig geotools release 1.0.0.using default settings. I have used your shape file as downloaded with no modification. The machine is a clean build with no tuning other than to opimise for performance in the windows control panel. I have run with tests both resident and vanilla in case windows was playing tricks. The time break down seems to be 1.72 display the remainder load, as a matter of interest I also loaded the example in Joe Woods landserf and obtained similar timings, puzzled, has there been any change on the web sites download recently? Do you have access to any profiling tools?

I've now tried this on another (slightly faster) machine -- it still takes close to 10 seconds to render all the 100000s of points (this is after several renderings, so Eclipse should have loaded everything it needs). If I change the render style away from the defaults (to draw smaller squares with no outline) then I can eventually get the render speed down to 3-4 seconds.

Can you explain what setup you are using? Is this with standard uDig 1.0.0, run as a standalone application?

Vince.

It doesn't it takes 3.24 sec on an initial run improving thereafter due to Eclipse loading techniques,on similar hardware. Maps taking that long to load are typically the size of the road network of British Columbia a somewhat larger system, you can down load this as an example from Geobase.org. I can find no evidence of heap space exhaustion perhaps you have an environmental issue?
