Daniel,

could you just have a look at the log file. You can find it in your
user home directory $HOME/uDig/.metadata/.log in some cases there
might be an other log file like .bak_X where X is a number. BTW, which
version do you user, 1.2/1.3.x - this would help us a lot.

In addition please try to copy the file and paste in the Layers-View /
already opened Map.
