first of all: i have my distancetool-plug-in up and running.
the difference between the tutorial and the original distancetool was the
absence of an own category at the extension-page.
i found it in the source of the original plugin.xml. i enhanced this in my
distance-tool-plug-in and after restart it was visible as a tool.
if this category-description is necessary, it should be written in the tool
plugin tutorial.
