Well it literally means it made a request and did not get any content 
back.  It could be that your geoserver is configured wrong? Have you 
been able to follow walkthrough2 (which includes a geoserver install).  
I would not mind confirming that you geoserver is configured correctly.

In particular the bounds and SRS returned by geoserver would control how 
udig asks for the content, and where it asks for content.

That is interesting - what is your original content in? I will CC this 
message to the GeoServer list (perhaps someone there knows if date is 
correctly handled).
