Static ports are a security hole, as Craig points out. Also, they require additional privileges unless you're going to use a non- standard port number. Finally, they don't fit with our minimal impact model. We want PTP to be deployable without requiring system administrator access, without special permissions, and without leaving long running processes on the machine. In effect, the proxy should use no more resources than a normal user.

Yes, but multiple proxy instances is just one reason. Security is also another reason for not using a static port. While some installations may be blocking port connections, you should always be able to tunnel back through your ssh connection to Eclipse.

Thanks a lot for the clarification. So the rationale for proxy to connect back Eclipse instead of proxy listening to a static port is there could be multiple instances of proxy running on the same machine, there will be binding conflicts ... is it right?
