Re: [andmore-dev] Fwd: FW: Naming of Andmore artifacts

Thanks for the feedback!

I will implement the changes unless the IP team has any objections.

That all looks good to me. For #4, Eclipse Andmore would be correct for the vendor name. We use Eclipse CDT for CDT ones.

[1] I would say that is the right place for the acknowledgement

[2] Yes

[3] I would not add the TM to those components because it is covered in the outside package name and the description.

[4] What's the standard here? I agree they need to be consistent, but is there an accepted practice? What do CDT, JDT, etc. do?

Hi,

I would like to consult about the appropriate naming of different Andmore artifacts like Plugin and Feature names, EPP package, Marketplace entry, etc. My goal is to have a consistent naming that complies with the Android trademark and with the Eclipse UI guidelines.

Here is a quote about the Android trademark from Google [1]:
"You may use the word "Android" in a product name only as a descriptor, such as "for Android" and the first instance should be followed by a TM symbol, "for Android™." In other messaging, the word "Android" may be used in text as a descriptor, as long as it is followed by a proper generic term (for example, "Android™ application"). Any use of the Android name must include footer attribution in your communications: "Android is a trademark of Google Inc.""

We also have the recommendation [2] to avoid using project names (like Andmore), because they are not clear to most users.

So, let's go through the naming of the different artifacts.

1. EPP package.
We are introducing the Android EPP package with Neon M4. Currently its name is "Eclipse for Android Developers". I believe this complies with Android trademark rules, except the usage the TM symbol. Should I add it in the name, i.e. "Eclipse for Android™ Developers"? Should I add the "Android is a trademark of Google Inc." text in the EPP package description?

2. Marketplace entry [3].
I changed the title to "Andmore: Development Tools for Android™". I added the "Android is a trademark of Google Inc." text in the description. Is it OK like this?

3. Feature names:
We have the following feature names on the update site:
- Andmore Eclipse Android Development Tools Feature (Incubating)
- Andmore Core Development Feature (Incubating)
- Andmore - Android Native Development Tools Feature (Incubating)
- Andmore - Android Hierarchy Viewer Feature (Incubating)
- Andmore - Android Traceview Feature (Incubating)
- Andmore - Android Tracer for OpenGL ES (Incubating)
- Android Signing Tools (Incubating)

I propose to change them in the following way:
- Development Tools for Android (Incubating)
- Core Development Tools for Android (Incubating)
- Native Development Tools for Android (Incubating)
- Hierarchy Viewer for Android (Incubating)
- Traceview for Android (Incubating)
- Tracer for OpenGL ES (Incubating)
- Signing Tools for Android (Incubating)

Should I add the TM symbol?

4. Vendor names.
At the moment we have all "Eclipse.org", "The Eclipse Foundation" and "Eclipse Andmore Project" in different plugins and feature. I propose to change it everywhere to "Eclipse Andmore".

Let me know your opinion?

Thanks,
Kaloyan
