Yes you can. The idea is the same you need to make a Filter and then call featureSource.getFeatures( Filter ); for more advanced options you can use featureSource.getFeatures( Query ).

Have a look at the GeoTools 2.2 javadocs; and check out the test cases for good examples.

We only started trying to make a user guide for GeoTools 2.5; before that there is very little documentation (other than javadocs and test cases).
