Hmmm.  You've found a bug.  And I've just found another bug.  Sigh.   
But here's the work around:

Try this.


1. Export the layer to a new shapefile.
2. Open the new shapefile.
3.  Select the features that you "DON'T" want in table view.
4.  Select Edit>Delete
