Re: [omr-dev] GitHub Label Taxonomy?

Unfortunately, it seems that only committers can add labels.

One label I really -really- want is a beginner label. I think that's an
important piece for new contributors.

You can add labels via the button next to the search text box when you go to
the issues or pull requests "tab" in the project. Not sure if that's only
leads or if anyone can create a new label.

The pre-canned list is:
        bug, duplicate, enhancement, help wanted, invalid, question

I like most of the ones on Robert's list, but I think the pre-canned
ones are
also useful, so let's not get rid of them. Robert, what's the difference
between a feature and an enhancement? To capture features that might
make the
project worse :) ?

How about we have:
        Type: bug, duplicate, enhancement, help wanted, invalid,
question, discussion
        Component: port, thread, gc, compiler, ??
        Architecture: arm32, x86, power, z
        OS: linux, osx, windows, ...?

Maybe better to use the pieces from our build specs to create the Arch
and OS variations?

We may want to eventually create some broader categories to help organize
things, but this seems like a good starter list to me.

Does anyone have something particular they'd like to see in the initial
list that's missing above?

I think it would be great to have all of these Labels available for Pull
Requests and Issues. Is the suggestion to label Issues and Pull
Requests using the "Label" provided by GitHub, add the text manually to
the title of Issues and Pull Requests when they are created or to add
text to the commit message?

Personally I would prefer if it was to just use the Label drop down box
but I do not see any way to create our own labels. I will check with
Mark to see if he can add them and if he can not we can likely get the
Eclipse team to add them for us.

My list looks like this:

* Compiler
* GC
* Port
* Thread
* Beginner

And maybe:

* Feature
* Enhancement
* Discussion

And maybe maybe some arch or OS labels.
