Re: [che-dev] Questions around planned Kubernetes support in Che 7

Thanks Brad.

That makes sense.

Unfortunately there isn't much documentation yet but the new workspace model with side car containers mean the image you work with doesn't need to be altered and the injection of agents we do in Che 6 is why we need the special stacks.

Hope that helps

Hi Brad,

Can you clarify what you mean about Che 7 not needing stacks?  Can you point me to any information explaining how to use this feature?

Thanks a lot,

No problem John, I should have read the linked issues. Afraid I can't help now that I have :(

I'm sure others will chime in.

Hi Brad, thanks for responding!

I probably should have phrased my question a little better - the Kubernetes support I'm referring to is this Github issue https://github.com/eclipse/che/issues/10574 - Porting the VS Code Kubernetes tooling to Theia for Che, allowing for a user to interact with their Kubernetes cluster via Theia. And whether or not that support would extend to creating/building a containerized app, and creating a deployment using 'kubectl' for example.

And thanks for the update on the release! Che 7 beta is looking pretty nice already and I'm excited to try out the final release when it comes.

Hi John, good news - Che already works with any standard Kubernetes distro. You can follow the install instruction in our docs:
https://www.eclipse.org/che/docs/che-6/index.html

You can build stacks using Kubernetes YAML or dockerfiles. We also ship with predefined stacks across a selection of technologies. Note that in Che 7 you will no longer need stacks - Che will just work with any image.

We just tagged our first beta release of Che 7 last week but we're behind on docs so it's probably going to be a bit of a challenge to try it. Sorry...

I'm not sure what you mean by your 3rd question but hopefully the other info here helps.

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently evaluating Eclipse Che for use in Docker & Kubernetes development. I see that some Github issues like
https://github.com/eclipse/che/issues/12696 and https://github.com/eclipse/che/issues/10574 reference possible future Kubernetes support in Che 7, and I had some questions:

1) What is its planned scope? Is it mostly everything that the VSCode plugin can do, or a subset? Will it extend to a user being able to create a containerized project with Che, build it and deploy on Kubernetes?
2) On that note, will there be stack templates with Docker, Kubectl, etc installed? Or will the user need to set up their own stack with those utilities?
3) Is there a current status on when it will available in the nightly drivers of Che? Or are there any development drivers with some partial support available to test with?
4) Lastly, when is the Che 7 GA currently planned for? I saw some articles mention sometime in March, but I'm not sure how up-to-date that was.

Thanks!
