I think it is important to distinguish between 
"PC"(Linux/Windows) and embedded applications.

The first answer is more correct for the embedded case and the second is
more correct for the "PC" case.

Perhaps it would make sense with an "Eclipse CDT Embedded Development
FAQ" ?
