[udig-devel] The standard vector file for the future?

Dear all,
I'm a little off-topic but I find it interesting to talk with you about
vector data format.
Many of us use .shp as standard vector format. And in some way it's the
standard also for uDig.

"Despite it’s popularity, Shapefile does have some serious limitations,
mainly due to it’s DBF heritage:

 - A shapefile is limited to 2 GB or 65535 records.
 - Records are limited to 1000 bytes or 32 fields.
 - Field names are limited to 8 characters, character fields can hold up to
254 bytes.
 - Unicode is not supported."

This sentence is from a great blog post I have read:
http://moreati.org.uk/blog/2009/03/01/shapefile-20-manifesto/

I think that in some we should abandon this format, and my vote is
undoubtedly for SpatiaLite:

I have see it coupled in action with QGis, and I'm astonished.

Spatialite is a young project, but it seems just really mature. It seems
very simple to configure and it's really portable.

I'm not a developer and I cannot help you, but I think that it would be
better to overcome the .shp format also in my beloved uDig.

Best regards,

a
