Hello:
I  would like to make a little request or suggestion to improve uDig:
Is it possible to include in uDig the functionality of editing polygons but this brand new edited polygon could be saved as a new shapefile?? 
So, the user could create an empty shapefile and decide whether it would be a shape of points, lines or polygons. I saw this functionality in ArcView GIS 3.2.
