Hurrah,  uDig 1.0.1 has been release and has a surprising number of 
improvements since 1.0.

Summary of improvements:

DB2 support.
Update site.
Indexed Shapefile used.
Point rendering performance improvements.
Labeling speed and positioning improvements.
Reduced memory requirements.
Numerous bug fixes.
Drag and drop from IE.
Mac OSX support.
Lazy loading of maps for quicker start-up time
