The link between udig and a geotools data store is the catalog. You will 
need to extend the net.refractions.udig.catalog.ServiceExtension 
extenstion point. This involves the implementation of three classes.

1. net.refractions.udig.catalog.ServiceExtension, which is responsible 
for taking in connection parameters (a url in the case of most file data 
stores) and creating a service from it.

2. net.refractions.udig.catalog.IService, the handle to your data store.

3. net.refractions.udig.catalog.IGeoResource, the handle to you feature 
source.

After the catalog handles have been written, all you should need to do 
is add another file format by extending the 
net.refractions.udig.catalog.ui.fileFormat extension point.

For an example, check out the net.refractions.udig.catalog.shp plugin. 
Your dxf catalog plugin will end up looking very similar to it.
