Note I was talking about "importing..." into the catalog not mapping.

Dropping the URI right onto the catalog pane does nothing. Dropping it
into the text box of the import dialog works, but gains only a little
effort since I'm still working 1 file at a time.

Using

/soft/GIS_Data/Beles/*.shp 

doesn't work either. :-(
