I did not have any luck with the --ramps.guess option despite a speed
>79km/h on all involved links. It does not detect the links in the shapefile
as ramps and adds extra lanes to the main road in connection. 

Since the overall representation in terms of number of lanes and positions
is accurate in the shapefile I have ended up importing the network with a
ramp length of 0 and will edit the geometries in Netedit. 

This seems to suffice.
