Re: [ptp-dev] EXTERNAL: Re: Remote CDT Compiling

I have the Juno Eclipse for Parallel Application Developers. I am using RHEL 6.2 and when trying to run the new eclipse it briefly shows the eclipse workspace and then crashes immediately. I’m not getting any errors on my console. All I have is the .log report. I’ve googled this issue, but many have attributed it to the version of gtk. My gtk is v2.18.9, so I don’t think that’s the issue.. Please help!!!

My ~/workspace/.metadata/.log reports the following:

Eclipse for Parallel Application Developers is an all-in-one download that has eclipse, cdt, ptp, etc. already installed for convenience.
If you need to install within your existing workbench, you can use update sites.
However your Eclipse 3.7.1 is rather old. 3.7 is two years old and is not the latest release of that version.
You will need an earlier release of PTP, 5.0 to match that, and its features are not as complete, but may suffice.

Yes you can update Eclipse for Parallel Application Developers just like any other Eclipse workbench.  It is based on Eclipse 4.2 and PTP 6.0

>...I am not doing PTP development.

I am copying the ptp-user mailing list since your questions seem more suited to user instead of developer questions.
If you want to do remote compiles, I would suggest using a more recent version than 3.7 (the next release after that is indeed 4.2) but others may be able to give other opinions.
Eclipse for Parallel Application Developers seems perfect for that.  You can install other plugins on top of that if you like, as well.

To do remote compiles, you can have the source also on your local machine (+remote) with a Synchronized project.
Or you can have the source only on the remote machine with a Remote Project.
You might start with this later, more complete version of Eclipse and then try again.

A question about the “Eclipse for Parallel Application Developers” (PAD Eclipse)…

We installed additional plugins like cdt, eclox, egit, mylyn, shell-ed, vrapper, etc in our current Eclipse (3.7.1). I see the PAD Eclipse comes w/ some of these plugins already embedded (i.e. cdt, egit and mylyn). Would I be able to upgrade said plugins at a later date in the PAD Eclipse (install on top of PAD)? We need the option to stay current. Thanks

Right, I think you're a more typical PTP user (not a developer), no problem!
Instructions at
http://wiki.eclipse.org/PTP/release_notes/6.0  Are probably more appropriate.
You may have already done this.
Just make sure you install all of RDT - that is where the Remote C/C++ Perspective is.. Or to be sure install all of PTP.
The "Eclipse for Parallel Application Developers" all-in-one download makes it easy.

Forgive me, but do those steps just apply if I want to submit to the PTP baseline? If so, I am not doing PTP development. I want to know how to setup my environment for my own project to perform remote compiles. Does that environment setup apply to my situation? Thanks
