RE: [ptp-dev] Cell IDE contribution to PTP

They can probably give more details than I, but they contributed the remote tools support to PTP and generalized that for general use (not just Cell),
are generalizing PTP resource managers to handle more runtime systems, and i believe plan to generalize other (originally) cell-specific views/tools etc
to be of use to the larger PTP community. We're working with them to leverage the PTP Performance Tools Framework for launching Cell (and other Linux)
performance tools as well. Basically, they have contributed code generalized for use to the larger PTP community, and are pre-req'ing some existing
PTP parts to require as part of the Cell IDE. Give some, take some, a symbiotic relationship.

RE: [ptp-dev] Cell IDE contribution to PTP

Actually it would really help if the IBM team could tell us why they are contributing it to PTP and what their vision is for the Cell IDE community.

Thanks,
Doug.

RE: [ptp-dev] Cell IDE contribution to PTP

Cool, thanks Craig. I can see Cell being useful for the scientific community. But I'm trying to figure out if there is any separation between the Cell IDE and IBM commercial interests. You did somewhat confirm that you are an IBM customer and do fit on the commercial side. I assume IBM, like most platform vendors, should be providing a supported IDE as a part of their solution, no?

I think we get into a fuzzy area when a commercial vendor contributes software that can only be used with their products. I have similar concerns with the xlc integration with the CDT, BTW. I'll need to check up the chain about that, assuming that's what this is. And, if the community fully support this, it makes it harder for me to argue.

Cheers,
Doug.

Re: [ptp-dev] Cell IDE contribution to PTP

The Cell architecture is a big component of Los Alamos' computing vision. We have just purchased the 1 Petaflop Roadrunner machine and are looking for ways to ease the transition for our developers. I'm a member of a small team of neural scientists at LANL who are purchasing a small Cell based cluster for code development. Our team is also using Eclipse and PTP and the Cell IDE fits very nicely in the parallel space we are working in.

Cheers,
Craig

I've added a comment on the bug. I'm just wondering how the Cell IDE fits into the PTP mandate. And I'm wondering about the community around the Cell IDE, i.e., who uses it, is there a community outside of IBM commercial interests?

        Greg,

I attached the necessary patches and the source code for Cell IDE in the Eclipse bug
        #240243.

Please, let me know if there is any issue.
