Re: [ospo.zone] Minimal Viable OSPO

Dear all,

As it happens we already have our heuristic model with the five goals (usage, trust, culture, engagement and strategy) and since our approach at OSPO.Zone is based on the OW2 OSS Good Governance initiative methodology, I want to read Boris' question and its follow-up as "Are there thresholds -- the first one being akin to an MVP -- in the implementation of the methodology?".

MVP applied to GGi? At this stage, I'm sceptical, we do not have enough real-life experience to identify optimum paths or thresholds for a progressive implemention of the methodology. All organisations are different so the notion of a minimum OSPO ex abstracto is imho not valid. I think of our Activities like the pieces on a chessboard; each organisation will have its own game plan (based on needs, priorities, corporate culture, etc.) and the way they will put Activities in motion is purely circumstantial (management power play, resources, existing low-hanging fruits, etc.).

As for OpenChain, we do not ignore them far from it but I'd say we do not have the same audience: OpenChain upstream, OW2 GGi downstream. OpenChain is all about "Supplied Software" license compliance and for organisation that are are part of the software supply chain. The OW2 OSS Good Governance initiative targets the mainstream market of OSS users of which over 90% are not involved in "supplying software" (think local goverments, hotel chains, transportation companies, etc.). OpenChain may be necessary for some organisations implementing GGi but not for all, far from it.

HTH,
-C.

Hi everyone,

maybe we could adopt a notation like the business model canvas and adapt it to the needs of an OSPO. It is used to define minimum viable products (MVP), so at least conceptually it seems to apply. The Open Data Institute (ODI) for example, has used it as a basis to create the Data Ethics Canvas.

Best regards to everyone,
Apostolos

Dirk, Mike,

Thanks for the inputs. I agree it would probably be a good start, but I don't think it'd be enough to define a minimal OSPO -- at least not in the OSPO Zone and Good Governance Initiative contexts.

In my humble opinion and understanding, what makes the OSPO Zone different is precisely that: a body of knowledge that goes beyond compliance and spans to organizational, cultural, and strategical areas.
Not all of them must be addressed in the beginning, of course, but I'd personally recommend starting quite early with e.g. educational and cultural topics. One example would be to provide people and teams with a point of contact for questions related to open-source within the organization. It may look futile, but I think it's a great way to actually start the community building and get traction.

It would indeed be sad if you stopped with OpenChain 2.1, but today it
probably gives you a minimum viable OSPO. The spec will keep evolving and
probably build out the contribution part and add a strategy and leadership
part. That's in line with how most companies / OSPOs follow the basic maturity
path of use, contribute, lead. Cheers, --Dirk
