From my perspective it is still relevant as is the Java SE version and OS version.  It is quite possible that  OS X and Java SE Y will run cleanly while OS Y and Java SE Y will not  as I have seen that more times than I would like to remember with Java EE/CTS

If we should still include the OS platforms, could we just refer to Linux, instead of referring to the exact distribution and version?  

Well not all versions of Linux are the same so it is worth being specific as a point of reference as it makes it easier when tracking down issues to know what  combinations will pass.
