Re: [iot-pmc] Discussion/Vote on Eclipse Kapua - GXT Version: 2.2.5

The vote is concluded by timeout: +2 for works-with, 2 non-voting.

The UI seems to be a major feature of Kapua, so leaving the non-GPL version of it without an UI, feels awkward and I doubt that anyone in practice really considers this option.

Nonetheless, I accept that the rest of Kapua is standalone and working; thus it fullfils the requirements for a works-with dependency.
Thanks for all the background infos and +1 from me - and good luck for finding alternative UI frameworks in the future :-)

Kai

The acronyms are a bit unfortunate, GWT is the Google library used to create _javascript_ sites from Java. GXT is a separate library that supplies UI elements and other features. GWT has been fully approved for both projects by Eclipse. GXT is the problem due to the GPL license. Kura replaced GXT with gwtbootstrap3, but this will not be possible for Kapua.

While the Kapua team tries to find an alternative, they are requesting the same “workswith” dependency that Kura used prior to v2.0.0. Kapua will be completely functional without GXT, but will not have a UI. Having the workswith dependency will allow users of Kapua to either:

1. Use a completely EPL friendly version with no UI
2. Use a version with the workswith dependency that has the UI and is distributed outside of the Eclipse channels

Now I am bit confused ...

David said : "Both Kura and Kapua use GWT." ... So is there any need then for a GXT CQ then?

If we still do need GXT, is there any timeline then for a replacement of GXT?

Yes, exactly. Kura moved to GWT since version 2.0.

In terms of approach yes, in terms of technology let's see. The two (Kura and Kapua) have different requirements.

I was under the impression that Kura has recently moved from GXT to GWT.

Is that correct?

If so, does that show the path forward for Kapua?

Hi,

I confirm the same approach used for Kura: A flag in the maven config that will make the build fully consume GXT in a non-EPL-compatible fashion and that this flag is always kept turned off at Eclipse.

I agree with the idea to look for more license-friendly alternative. Unfortunately the replacement was not possible for the first contribution that's why we asked for a works-with dependency.

Since GXT is not going to change his licensing model, we'll not consider it a long term solution and we already started planning concretely for an alternative.

Hope this answers your doubts,

Stefano

The same request was done by Kura two years ago and has only been tentatively accepted by Technology PMC at that time.

Can you confirm that the same setup will be put in place for Kapua, i.e. having a flag in the maven config that will make the build fully consume GXT in a non-EPL-compatible fashion and that this flag is always kept turned off at Eclipse?

In general, I agree with Gunnar that "GPL seem risky for potential adopters“ and that it would be favorable to look for more license-friendly alternatives.

Wes stated in 2014 that "we understand this is not a viable long term option.  We are looking into others but as noted, it will take some time.  But, this is what we have today.“
Do I have to understand this request from Kapua in the way that GXT is now seen as the long term option after all?

Kai

The web component is only seen as an addition and Kapua can also work without the Web UI.

Kapua will not distribute the any binaries which contains this dependency from Eclipse download locations.

As I am an involved in the process I will not vote.

Please discuss or vote with an indication of works-with or pre-req.

Cheers
