Thank you Brad for your feedback!
About filtering/tagging vs. separated instance: I think the maintainer or the aggregator should decided on what is less effort. In any case, there will be manual work for the author, more precisly for those, who contribute to more than one topic/aggregator. As an example, Mikes blog does aggergate some posts on planet, some on Jakarta and I believe some on both. So he as an author probably has to decided where posts are shown. Maybe somebody from the EF could provide some details here. But most likely, authors just need to tag in their blog in their respective system (e.g. wordpress) and provide separate RSS feeds. For aggregators this seems like the simplest solution.
The question is whether we must wait for anything or whether we can start with 1. and 2. by just using the Planet as it is for now. My thinking on this is:
- we publish blogs anyways until we get a potentially better solution (i.e. focussed on ECDT)
- we want to reach a wide audience with our topics anyways and ECDT topics are also Planet topics
- when we move to a focussed aggregator, it would be nice to have some visibility of the topic on the planet already
- even if we had a focussed aggergator, some posts might also syndicate on the Planet still, as ECDT is just such a core Eclipse topic
So my proposal for immediate action would be:
1. Blog, which are related to ECDT but not yet syndicated on the planet should do so if they like the idea
2. New blogs which get syndicated do an announcement that ECDT topics are now on the planet, too, existing blogs already syndicated do the same
Once this working group is established, we can discuss refinement options, i.e. separate aggregator, etc.
Please let me know your thoughts.
Best regards,
Jonas
