Re: [ecd-tools-wg] News aggregator

+1 on the idea Jonas and I think you've identified the right set of 4 improvements.

However, I'd prefer to see a blog aggregator that allowed me to focus in only on the ECD related content. I'm not sure if it's easier to do that via tagging (seems a little manual and error prone) or by setting up our own instance of the aggregator to just focus on ECD materials.

Hi Paul,

thank you for the input, that looks indeed very nice. I have two comments:

(1) I would see the "relative value" (value/effort) for a blog aggregator much higher compared to a news feed, as it is "just aggregating" and does not require to produce additional content. Therefore, I suggest to tackle this first, and the news second. Also blog content naturally covers important news, too.

(2) Rather than creating something new, I would prefer to reuse and potentially evolve what we have, for that reason I suggested the Planet. I think there is a difference to Jakarta, this working group added a completly new topic field to the Eclipse ecosystem. ECDT adds a new topic field, too, but it is more a logical evolution of the Eclipse tools ecosystem. As stated in the working group kick off presentation, almost every company plans to migrate tools to the cloud. Therefore, I believe there is value in evolving the established communication channels we have for this existing ecosystem, which again directs my thoughts to the Planet. By the way: Some blogs on the Jakarta aggregator are also syndicated on the Planet.

Best regards,

Jonas

Hi Jonas.

I agree with the value of having a blog aggregator and news feed, and in general making sure there is information available for adopters and consumers.

The Jakarta EE working group has done both of these, and it’s proven to be a success.  Check out how they’ve implemented these at jakarta.ee   Something very similar could be done for ECD working group.  This does require some funding to create and maintain, but well worth it IMO.

Thanks

Hi,

I am aware that this working group is formally not yet created. Anyways, I would like to open the discussion on one topic I believe is a crucial enabler to achieve the “promote” and “engage” parts of the charter of this working group: a news aggregator.
I believe articles and blog posts are the essential way of promoting technologies and therefore strengthen our ecosystem. Consequently, projects and many member companies in the ECDT working group maintain their own blogs. While this is perfectly fine and should remain like this, I believe we are missing a central place for adopters or interested people to subscribe for news from within the ecosystem around ECDT. Having a central place does IMHO provide a classic “together we are stronger” advantage, as an example:
Readers will more likely subscribe to a central source covering more topics
Readers will learn about the variety of the ecosystem, e.g. a Theia user might learn about Che
Therefore I believe a central news aggregator would help to promote the ecosystem a lot. All projects and companies can keep their own blogs, so nobody would lose traffic, but rather potentially win new readers.
Instead of creating something new, I propose to harvest/reuse something that already exists: The Planet Eclipse. Some of you might not know this aggregator, it has been very popular as a central news aggregator in the Eclipse universe and still aggregates quite a number of blogs from the ecosystem. Furthermore it is hosted/owned by the EF, which I believe is a precondition. It can currently be subscribed to via Twitter, via RSS or by visiting the website.
So the next question is, if Planet Eclipse is missing anything to be the central news aggregator for ECDT related topics? IMHO, there are 4 areas that could be improved:
Missing aggregated blogs: I know at least that the Che Blog is not aggregated, and other blogs are probably missing as well
Marketing: If those missing blogs are aggregated, we should market the planet as a great source to learn about things going on in the ECDT ecosystem
Filtering/Channel: Over the years, the topic scope of Planet Eclipse has become quite broad (Eclipse tools, frameworks, runtime, IoT). I think we might consider something like tags or channels so that authors can tag their posts e.g. with IoT or ECDT and subscribers can select the topics they are interested in.
Potentially a technical overhaul: We might consider doing some technical updates, e.g. enabling https or improving the UI
So I am interested in any opinions about this topic in general and the 4 areas of improvement in particular. I believe 1. and 2. can be achieved pretty quickly and 3 is probably more important than 4.
Even though this working group is not yet established, I think creating a good platform for sharing further promotion about ECDT related topics is a crucial enabler so IMHO, we should tackle this rather sooner than later.

Best regards,
Jonas
