Re: [ecd-pmc] Committer election is now complete for Tina Kurian on Eclipse Che

Given that the PMC has already approved this particular election, this discussion is academic. However...

Meritocracy is one of the three foundational principles described in the "rules of engagement" in the Eclipse Foundation Development Process. So, it's obviously important.

A rule of thumb when creating a nomination statement is to ask yourself whether or not, without knowing the individual or having knowledge of who they work for, you would vote to make that person a committer.

"more convenient for the team" is not a demonstration of merit.

I would still like to understand the relationship between Eclipse Che and DevWorkspace. If DevWorkspace is content that is moving into the Eclipse Che project, for example, having experience with that code base might provide a pretty solid basis for a merit statement. In that case, however, I would expect that the committer election would start around the same time the code contribution is delivered to the IP Team for their review.

DevWorkspace is not moving into the Eclipse Che project. It's not and won't be an Eclipse project.

While I have your attention, Eclipse Che is way overdue for a release or progress review. And it's long past time, I think, for the project to exit incubation. Please engage with the EMO at your earliest convenience.

I am on vacation this week but I will definitely reach the EMO when I get back.

I'd also like to know what steps the Eclipse Che project is taking to attract committers from a more diverse group of companies.

We spend a lot of time triaging every issue and PR on GitHub, moderating the community chat and the mailing list and running the community call every week. We do propose engineers from any company as committers. We also participate in every Eclipse event to promote Che.

Although there is still room for improvements, we are definitely running the project in a way that any individual should feel welcome and any company should feel safe to participate in. That said, please don't hesitate to provide any advice to make the project more attractive.

Hey Gennady,

Thanks for your additional input and for reaching out.

Do I understand this correctly that the reason for the candidate to be elected now instead of after some PRs to the project is that it would be "more convenient for the team“ ?
Even though I can imagine that and understand it (no question about that at all), I still doubt that this is a good-enough reason for an exception to the "demonstrate merit" within the context of the project.

@Gorkem, @Nedelcho, @Wayne: What are your additional thoughts here?

Cheers
Martin

Hi Gorkem, Martin and Nedelcho,

Seems I can not answer just in the mail-list, please consider:

Yes, there is some reason.
AFAIK, Tina will be contributing more to "Eclipse part" of the project codebase (at least that's the plan),
we believe she is experienced enough to do it well, so it would be more convenient for the team if she
is an Eclipse committer.

We'll appreciate if we can do it now and will treat it with understanding if you, guys, do not see enough formal reasons to promote.

Thanks a lot,
Gennady

Hey Nelecho, Hey Gorkem,

The discussion from last time about project management aspects where around the question how someone can demonstrate merit in the context of a project for those management tasks (which might be technically more difficult than submitting PRs for code and demonstrate merit that way).

As fas as I unterstand, the candidate that we discuss this time works on code, so I don’t see anything that prevents that candidate from demonstrate merit via PRs for the project that we talk about.
Is there any reason why this candidate is not able to do this - and then get elected as a committer?

Cheers
Martin
