Hi Kai,
I think the main compatibility issue is with android JVM.
Also a lot of company are still using Java6/7 and pay for maintenance (or not..).
For example Leshan target is still Java 7, JDK 7 public updates from Oracle are ending this month, but you still can pay, or use openjdk/azul JVM.

Given that Oracle already has officially seized support for Oracle 7 I do not really see why we should need to stay on Java 7 except for reasons of compatibility with some embedded or mobile platforms (which might be better off with the Java 8 SE or Embedded as well).
