[viatra-dev] Xtext-JDT incompatility in Oxygen.1a might break VIATRA

Hi all,
in recent changes with related to Java 9 support introduced an incompatibility [1] between Xtext and the JDT version that will be introduced in Oxygen.1a (will be available 11th October). This will most likely cause breaking issues for VIATRA (e.g. our entire tooling might fail to start at all). Xtext 2.13 already contains a fix for this issue, however, that will not be released until the 20th October.
In the meantime, it is safe to assume VIATRA will be broken in in Oxygen.1a. To make matters worse, VIATRA 1.6.1 (included in Oxygen.1) is not compatible with Xtext 2.13 because of the set version ranges. We could extend them in a bugfix release, but it is too late to include it in SimRel until Oxygen.2.
Currently, in [1] there are discussions about JDT providing the old method as well to make older Xtext versions functional, but that will also not happen until Oxygen.2.
What I see here that we will have to create a VIATRA 1.6.2 version that declares compatibility with Xtext 2.13 to reduce the window where we cannot work; for older releases of VIATRA currently it seems it will not be compatible with Oxygen bugfix releases. We should think about how to notify our users of this issue.
I will notify you if anything more positive happens; but I wanted to make this information public.
