Roland and Greg,
Thanks for the pointers. I'll dig into it and follow up.

Hi,
I recommend not to use tunneling but ProxyCommand/StreamForwarder instead. It has two main advantages:
- it is securer (with port-forwarding any other local user can use the connection)
- it works even if the server has port-forwarding disallowed (e.g. the login server at ORNL)
has this implemented with StreamForwarder.
I implemented this beforeĀ
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=345329 as ProxyCommand. But I think the StreamForwarder solution is simpler, doesn't require an extra process, and doesn't require the user to specify the command (netcat or equivalent). The only disadvantage of StreamForwarder is, it is a bit less flexible (one can't do crazy things like multihop with http proxy behind ssh gateway).
If anyone wants better support for ssh proxy, let me know on 345329. Should be easy to add.
Roland
