You are right. This was introduced for GCC 4.5.0: cf. http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GFortran.
I have been using 4.5.x on Windows since quite some time now, thanks to the versions downloaded from www.equation.com (thanks guys!)
and also on opensuse 11.3.
