Re: [iot-wg] Eclipse IoT instant messaging survey

1. Do you think the Eclipse IoT community should start using an instant messaging platform?

Yes.

2. Which instant messaging platforms should we consider? Why?

Gitter.im

Because it’s close to the OSS codebases, e.g. issues / PRs can be linked. There are integrations available for chatbots.

Authentication can be done with existing GitHub, GitLab or Twitter account.

Reading the chat is possible even unauthenticated.

3. How should we leverage an eventual instant messaging platform? For example, should we create channels for our projects? Should non-members be able to access it or not?

There are already channels for many Eclipse IoT Projects, e.g.:

https://gitter.im/eclipse/packages

https://gitter.im/eclipse/ditto

https://gitter.im/eclipse/hono

https://gitter.im/eclipse/hawkbit

https://gitter.im/eclipse/vorto

There even is an eclipse room (which is accessible not publicly, but for all GitHub members of the “eclipse” org):

https://gitter.im/eclipse

The projects channels must be accessible for everyone, there may be some internal channels for Eclipse IoT WG internal stuff.
