As a side note: Last week I've created bug 421702 [1] as an umbrella bug for all (potential) changes to the initial preferences. And this one about UTF-8 is already listed there [2].

I'd like to see all questions to our users reflected by a single bug report. And ideally all these bugs are referenced from bug 421702.
