It seems the next step is to actually
define which components you want in the SOA package. When do you think you can
have a first draft of the component list?

Markus,
be assured we only intend to use components that are available from the Galileo
SR1 p2 repository.

Hi *,
just for my understanding: Is the content that you would like to have in this
package already available from the Galileo p2 repository? Or from the Galileo
SR1 p2 repository?
And for everybody else's understanding: Yes, I think there are many good
reasons to align the EPP packages with the yearly release train.
First, it is the level of quality. Everything that is available from a release
train is tested, works together (at least it should work together), has its IP
approved, etc. and in the end, there is exactly *one* p2 repository that serves
as input for the EPP package build. Especially the last fact is important for
EPP, because everything else makes building packages overly complex and a
nightmare.
Second, ... okay, I could go on to write up additional reasons or point to the
mail archive where I've already written down many of them. ;-)
So back to my opening question: Where is your content? Is it already available
from the Galileo p2 repository? If so this *could* change the situation.

Why can't we build the SOA package with Galileo SR1? It
won't be too different from existing packages in the beginning.

Ian, Markus,
the SOA IWG would really appreciate being able deliver a SOA package before the
Helios release. We believe that providing the SOA package will help us to get
in touch with interested parties and push that topic forward much better than
only discussing this e.g. in the mailing list. I am a strong supporter of
"release early, release often" and one year between two releases is
an awful long time. How can we sort things out and agree on a release date for
the SOA package?
@Markus: Thx for your offer to support in defining the package, as soon as we
exactly know the contents of the package we will come back to you.
Regards,
Zsolt

Markus,
Is there a reason the EPP packages need to be tied to the release train?
It seems a bit restrictive to make new packages wait what is essentially
a year to be able to build a new package. If someone, like the SOA WG,
wants to create a new package based on the Galileo release bits is there a
technical issue that prevents this from happening?
Thanks
Ian

Hi Zsolt,
some short answers:
- A SOA package was missing and is highly appreciated!
- Earliest possible release: You are correct that the release of EPP packages
and especially the content of the packages is bound to the yearly release
trains, e.g. Ganymede, Galileo, Helios... so the next possible release for this
new package is Helios next June. On the other hand, maybe this is better than
it sounds now because we try to build packages for every Helios milestone. And
joining the next release train is something that I would propose to you anyway.
- The How-to on the page that you mentioned below is correct, *except* that the
build of the packages changed. This affects the config file and some other
parts. I can offer that we work on the new package together when you are able
to deliver content (at the same time we can update the docs on the wiki).

Hi
*@epp-dev,
The Eclipse SOA Initiative an Industry Working Group, which at the moment is in
the proposal phase, plans to deliver an EPP package named "SOA
package". It seems that I will be the package maintainer and therefore
have just some questions.
- When would be the earliest possible date to release the package. The working
group would like release it in the week Sept. 28, which means we would have to
release it together with Galileo SR1
- If the schedule planned by the working group is to tight and we have to
postpone the release is it now possible to release EPP packages in between
simultaneous releases. I know that in the past this was not possible.
- Is the how-to at http://wiki.eclipse.org/EPP/How_to_create_a_package
still accurate? Otherwise I would be more than glad to get some guidance how to
further proceed.
Regards
Zsolt Beothy-Elo
