Sounds great to me. I had MSVC in mind too, I guess we've all used it at one
time or another. One thing you left out - a notion of custom build steps
(like pre-link, post-link, etc.).

major CDT release.  It's based on, but not identical to, work we've done
here at TimeSys for our soon-to-be-released TimeStorm IDE.
