Re: [wtp-releng] Proposal to change build time stamps to UTC
|
David,
Thank you sharing this information. It was a bit of a mystery to me. I
say we go ahead and make the change.
Does anyone see any problems chaning our time stamps to builds to use
UTC, instead of the local time of build machine?
Its a pretty easy change in build scripts, using parameters on
<tstamp> task.
I've been doing with "head" builds for a day or two (even though they
still say (+0300) since that is hard coded
on web page.
The need for this is that I've realized that as we get the ability to
do builds on different machines, from the world,
and still upload the build results, the time stamps are hard to compare.
We either have to fix the web page display of the UTC offset (per
build machine time zone), but that I think is
kind of complicated (e.g. to get sorting correct) plus more confusing
to clients.
It then dawn on me that because of the nice cleanup Naci did a month
or so ago, that "time stamp" is
pretty localized to one place, and as far as I can tell is pretty
arbitrary.
FYI, we currently "stamp" the build at the time it starts.
The only draw back is there will be a short period of overlap, where
the download pages will
say "UTC" for all dropped builds, even though that's not quite
accurate for previously dropped
builds. BTW, my proposal is just to display (UTC) after the build's
time stamps, instead of (+0000).
That might "break" some people's "screen scraping" type programs, but
... doubt if anyone
is using that time offset.
