so, irc, hipchat, slack, glitter and now mattermost.

One thing I realise is that the four latter ones are great for closed groups (i.e. companies, closed netted),
but suck for open communities.

Haven't seen much suck with our test Mattermost server. In case you missed it:

 
Had some great discussions with the CDT crew. And we have a channel alerting us to forum postings. There's Jenkins plug-ins we can use to see build issues, etc. It's like Slack but open and self-hosted.

My vote goes for irc.

If you don't like irc - considered using a decent client ? :)

Last I checked (and every time I check) there wasn't one that I found decent.

We're going to make a big push with Mattermost in the Eclipse community. You'll find me there.

I believe multiplying the community on multiple channels (IRC vs
Mattermot) is actually a communication and productivity anti-pattern, and
divides the community instead of aggregating it.
I'm trying to reduce the amount of IRC-like technologies I use because
following conversations and topics become a nightmare. So I'll remain on

good old IRC if you need me.
