In open source the near future is never safe; as projects run on volunteer effort. :-) There exists both GML and KML parsers in the library we use, GeoTools. But we have no volunteers scheduled to bring this functionality into uDig at this time.

Sorry!  I would expect it to be about a weeks work; something that could be cut down a lot if there were people around able to test each day.  Doing an import and export wizard would also work and be only a couple of days.
