Re: [udig-devel] walkthrough 1 - refractions postgis instance is unavailable

ps - the http://CSL.com.mx server is not a live website... it's purely
for testing postgresql/postgis, geoserver, openlayers, and some gps
tracking services, proxy services, etc. this test site works with
some palm(prc) and windows mobile(cab) handheld software that when
installed on a device with embedded gps, or one connected to a
bluetooth gps, can track the location of those handhelds. this
handheld software also facilitates vector point, path, and polygon
shapefiles(unlimited layers), and limited to about 100,000 geometries
per shapefile. can also facilitate raster images, which auto-load as
background layers. user can change line width, color, etc. on vector
maps. user can create new or edit existing point maps. user can
synchronize point maps(POIs) with server( http://CSL.com.mx), and also
sync between handheld units. has a moving map when being used with
embedded/bluetooth gps, and of course user can log points and paths,
and export directly to kml, etc., from the handheld itself. user can
snap screenshots of the maps, and a plethora of other features. if
any of you have either a palm device like a treo 650, 680, or
lifedrive, or a plam device with windows mobile installed, or any
other windows mobile device like htc, et, al, and wish to test this
software with your own shapefiles, send me an email and i'll get you
setup with a prc/cab file for use/testing on your own phone. right
now you have to use a java application to convert your
shapefiles(vector) and images(raster) to the .mmap format, which is
the file type the software accepts, which is more flexable then the
shapefile format, hence it's use. ideally, and if anyone is
interested, it would be nice to make a udig plugin that handles this
conversion to and from the palm/windows mmap format. i thought i
would throw this out there, if anyone else is in need of a software
application for their handheld, whose purpose is for field data
collection(POIs). this software is intended for our own internal use,
but would provide licenses in exchange to/for anyone willing to make a
udig plugin. also currently working on nokia(symbian), blackberry,
and iphone versions. at present time, we have blackberry and nokia
versions, but only the gps/wifi ap/gsm tower tracking features work on
those two platforms... no vector map capability at this time. as it
relates to the iphone version, it will likely be ready for beta
testing within the next couple of months, but does require an iphone
that is jailbroken, as it accesses certain system frameworks that are
not otherwise available via the official apple sdk(runs in the
background, etc.).

uDig walkthrough 1 is looking good; so far the main problem is that
the PostGIS instance at www.refractions.net is missing. I am not
sure if it can be turned back on or not. Is this something anyone
would be willing to host? Connecting to PostGIS is an important user
story for walkthrough 1 to make.
