I will do my best to make the cache as general as possible; I am just saying up front what the limitations of my ability to test will be. Unless we do a run with the profiler we should not assume where the rendering process is slow .. as an example I spent a month of WFS performance; and found that changing the size of the array used to hold features when reading when reading made things over a 100 times faster (it was spending most of its time swapping threads).

Not much to add here, except that some of us have been surprised at how slow the postgres layers are (just drawing styled lines representing roads, and styled points (circles, squares, etc) representing houses. So if some caching approach would improve that performance, we'd be interested to know more.
