Here is an overview of the issue:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
        Key: UDIG-322
    Summary: Scripting language
       Type: Wish

     Status: Unassigned
   Priority: Major

 Original Estimate: Unknown
 Time Spent: Unknown
  Remaining: Unknown

    Project: uDIG

   Assignee:
   Reporter: dblasby

    Created: Tue, 1 Mar 2005 10:50 PM
    Updated: Tue, 1 Mar 2005 10:50 PM
Environment: all

Description:
Udig would be much easier to extend and do "fancy stuff" if it had a simple scripting language and easy access to the components.

Most GIS's have a scripting language that allows for plugins and scripting. Most GIS power users are actually quite proficient with these and they're taught in most GIS courses.

Its a good way for users to actually script udig w/o having to actually figure out how to use the full plugin environment - including learning java, eclipse, design patterns, and such. Thats probably too difficult for most non-professional-java-developer users.

JUMP had a very simple beanscript plugin that was useful.
