Re: [tools-pmc] Removing the Parallel EPP download

HI Jonah,
EMO hasn't formally scheduled the termination. We were giving some extra time to the community to push back or propose a different solution.
At this point, I'm not sure we need to schedule a termination review at all, but we do need someone to step forward. And we need to decide where we should move this project.
For those reasons, I believe a restructuring review would be more appropriate, but I'm holding off until we have collected all possible solutions for the Photran project.
Hope this answers your question.

Hi Maria Teresa,

I am simply proposing we wait (maybe) 2 more weeks before archiving to give such a candidate a chance to come forward. As of now I know of no one.

BTW, I am a little unfamiliar with the process and I may have misunderstood your previous emails. Is there already a termination review started? It seems not as it isn't listed on https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/tools.ptp.photran/governance. I would like to make sure that we don't declare the review complete for a couple of weeks.

Thanks Jonah, all,
I believe we can hold on the termination and archiving given the pushback from the community.
However, we would need someone to do minimum maintenance work on the project to keep it alive, and we need to decide where should we move this project, since its parent PTP project was terminated recently. We could either move directly under the Tools TLP, or under a similar-related project (this could help solve the issue of maintenance). Do you happen to have any candidates in mind?
Kind regards,
Maria Teresa

Hi folks, Thank you for the feedback on your uses.

For those not following the photran mailing list a couple of additional people have stepped forward saying they still use it, but will stick with last release version.

@EMO I'm not sure what procedure or timeline should be here - but a number of users have stated they still use Phortan, but as of now no one has stepped forward with interest in doing ongoing maintenance. I would like to delay the archiving and give the termination review a little more time to sit in the community in case there are people who do want to step forward to maintain it going forward.

Thanks
Jonah

Hi Maria Teresa,

I didn't have any answer and I have been away from my desk for the last week, but FTR Jeffrey had an answer that didn't make it to tools-pmc here on the phortan list:

No insights from me Jonah,

I will be fine if this project terminates.

Thanks

-Jeff

I have had two people come in relatively quickly (Bernard and Yehuda) but their emails are having trouble making it to the lists (I will individually forward them to the list so they get archived). As part of the termination review I think we need to ensure their voices are heard, and in particular if any of them are willing to step up and take on the ongoing maintenance of PTP/Phortran now that Jeff and Greg has stepped back from the project.

Dear all,
it's been a week since my last email.
Since I have not received any feedback on the Eclipse Photran Fortran Development Tools Project (https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/tools.ptp.photran) I will be scheduling a termination review in the upcoming days.
Kind regards,
Maria Teresa

Dear PMC, Jeffrey, Jonah,
we are completing the termination review for the Eclipse PTP project. While doing this I realized PTP is parent to Eclipse Photran Fortran Development Tools (https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/tools.ptp.photran) which seems to be inactive as well.
Do any of you have any insights regarding this project? Should we consider it for termination as well? or would you prefer moving this project directly under the Tools TLP?
Look forward to receiving your feedback.

Hi folks,

The PTP project has started a termination review and its JIPP has already been shutdown. As the PTP project was the main added value of the Parallel package (compared to CPP package) we are going to remove it from EPP (and PTP from SimRel) as there isn't any way to build updates.

See https://github.com/eclipse-packaging/packages/issues/85 for details and more links and a last minute chance to weigh in if you have concerns or questions.

FTR I am sad to see this package go, it still gets many downloads so some users are likely to miss it, but unless someone steps forward to maintain the PTP project I can't see how it can have a reasonable future.

Thank you Greg and everyone else for your contributions to PTP and Parallel package.
