Re: [technology-pmc] [CQ 3707] liblttvtraceread Version: 0.12

Greetings noble Technology PMC members. We have another request from Linux Tools for another Exempt Pre-req. This one is similar in concept to the previous, as developers who would use this Eclipse technology would have the corresponding Linux technology already installed on their workstation.

Please respond with your concerns, questions, or +1s.

For completeness, here is the text of the request:
Committer: Francois Chouinard fchouinard@xxxxxxxxx

Project: technology.linux-distros

http://foundation.eclipse.org/projects/projects_edit.php?ProjectID=technology.linux-distros

Name: liblttvtraceread
Version: 0.12
Description: LTTng is a Linux kernel tracing tool that stores its traces in
a compact and efficient binary format. It comes with LTTv, a GNOME front-end to
control tracing, retrieve traces from the target and analyze them.

The Eclipse LTTng project (under Technology/Linux Tools) aims at providing an
equivalent (in fact, better) and extendable front-end to LTTng.

The LTTng developers also provide ltvtraceread, a custom library (in C) that is
used by LTTv to parse the LTTng traces.

Instead of re-coding that library from scratch, we decided to re-use it by
simply wrapping it with JNI and load it at run-time (that would be a
\"pre-req\" dependency).

We don\'t distribute the actual library in any form (source or binary). What we
provide are instructions to download, compile, install and configure it
instructions (in our wiki and Help plugin).

Of course, it would be very cool to distribute the library with our plugins.

Cryptography: No

License(s): GNU General Public License (GPL) v2

Project URL: lttng.org
Source URL: http://lttng.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=lttv.git;a=summary

Given that the code is GPL, Francois' last comment must be disregarded. While it would indeed be cool to distribute the library, it is impossible.

Thanks Francois.

Awaiting PMC's discussion / resolution as a non-exempt pre-req", followed by
their collective vote on this CQ.

Sorry - typo....correcting myself. Consideration should be as an exempt
pre-req.

Thanks. Barb
