ThreadX is definitely of interest for Harman and we would be willing to participate in the working group. I can’t commit to specific work to be done at this time but talks around ThreadX have already occurred. I also can’t comment for Samsung and SOC support on their side but this is something we can work towards.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [sdv-wg] Proposal for an Eclipse ThreadX SIG within the Eclipse SDV WG

[EXTERNAL EMAIL]

All: I raised this topic in the last steering committee meeting. Here is my formal proposal to the entire working group, which begins a 2 week clock. We will have one more SC meeting if there are more questions to discuss directly. I am also happy to discuss the proposal directly here.

The Eclipse ThreadX project has been created and is beginning the work together as the first release is made. It represents the world’s first open source licensed, safety certified RTOS that is proven and widely deployed. An Eclipse ThreadX Interest Group has been running since December 2023 to determine if there is enough interest for member companies to form a working group that would exist to:

  1. Consolidate the project getting the project under the Eclipse governance process quickly.
  2. Preserve the certifications working through the processes to enable downstream adopters of ThreadX to certify their products and significantly shorten the lifecycle of safety-certified products based on Eclipse ThreadX.
  3. Build the community nurturing new contributions, driving adoption via developer advocacy, and creating cross-pollination with our other communities within the Eclipse Foundation such as IoT and SDV.
  4. Promote the brand returning to the original trusted ThreadX name.
  5. Grow the ecosystem to ensure a sustainable future for ThreadX of all ecosystem participants: silicon/SBC manufacturers, embedded system integrators, and tool vendors.

As discussions have progressed, it appears too early to develop a full blown Eclipse ThreadX Working Group, but there appears to be interest in the automotive space to ensure certifications are preserved and processes developed to support Eclipse projects obtaining and maintaining safety critical certifications. To this end, we propose the formation of a ThreadX Special Interest Group under the Eclipse Software Defined Vehicle WG with the following scope:

The ThreadX Special Interest Group will drive the evolution of safety certification practices for the Eclipse ThreadX project, using it as the working model for future projects under the Eclipse SDV WG umbrella. The working group will:

  • Maintain the existing Eclipse ThreadX certifications.
  • Support current work to develop additional Eclipse engineering practices required for safety certification of projects that can be applied within other Eclipse SDV WG projects that wish to move towards safety certification.
  • Explore ecosystem models for making project certifications available to end user organizations.
  • Drive toward Eclipse ThreadX recognition as the best open source alternative for automotive.

It should be noted that this SIG under the Eclipse SDV WG does not change the project intent to maintain the best broad application scope.

I invite other Eclipse SDV Working Group members willing to join the SIG to state their intent by replying to this email.

kind regards, stephe
