thanks for providing this quick response. Looking at the links you provided I realized that I should have said Kubuntu - not Ubuntu. I am using KDE, not the Unity desktop.
Indeed, * the hints provided for Ubuntu don't help here (I tried). * I didn't see these problems with luna + Kubuntu Quantal Quetzal (12.10) before.
But it also means that it might still be a (K)ubuntu problem rather than an Eclipse problem. Thanks for pointing that out. Presumably I should close this thread and knock at the doors of http://askubuntu.com/ .
On the other hand, as resizing the window fixes the problem, we have a decent work around here.
