No, it's not a false alarm - please file a bug, thanks!
You just found a convenient work-around. :)
I still need to fix it so the compile and link commands are never blank.

As it turns out, the boilerplate says "Invoking GCC C Compiler" and
"Invoking GCC C Linker", but there is no compiler/linker name (such as
"gcc") in the actual command lines. Everything seems to work fine when
one enters either gcc or mpicc (or, I assume, any valid compiler and
linker names) by hand in the project properties window.
Sorry about the false alarm (although maybe PTP should default to "gcc"
in the project properties window for this choice of project).
