Re: [nebula-dev] Requesting Approval for 3 new widgets into Nebula
|
Sure thing, I don't have a static link on the site right now, but you can use this one:
http://www.hexapixel.com/files/widget_example_code.zip
That zip contains the test code I've used to create the screenshots. I also included the
images I used as both source and as a jar (to make it easier to include as external jar or such).
For the other stuff, I'll just start the process and we'll see where it goes, thanks!
Let me know if you have any issues with that code.

Hi Emil,
IANAL so I won't make any judgement on the IP issues. You will just
have to go through the Eclipse IP review.
Re snippets - I'd like to be able to run and play with the widgets.
Can you post those snippets on your website? Maybe include them with
the source download or something?

I will read through the link provided, thanks.
Regarding test code:
Yep, I have test code that I used for creating the screenshots etc. I
can re-work some of that code to make them snippet-able. Should be very
easy.
Regarding ownership;
The widgets have been used in two companies, however, one has gone
under and no longer exists in any way (the software went down with it)
and in both cases I gave them a copy of the code with a private license
that stated that the code was mine and that they were only allowed to
use or modify it for the project for which it was being used and no
re-distribution or otherwise was allowed. Am I correct in assuming then
that there is no need for any release signing as the code has been 100%
mine all along? My license was written exactly as follows and was at
the top of each affected source file:
--
Written by Emil Crumhorn. Private License. This widget has been allowed
full use in [project name] by [company name] and may be distributed as
a part of [project name]. Standalone and/or re-distribution in a
different project or application is disallowed.
--
In summary:
- Gantt chart => Only used in company that went under. I re-used
some code for a completely different widget, but there is really no
similarity between the two widgets at all.
- Button composite => Only used in company that went under.
- Combo box => Used in both.
So it's only really one widget that's in question, if there is a
question.
Do let me know,
Emil

Emil,
Peter pretty much got it right. The widgets look very cool. I think
they would make great additions.
The first things I would want to make sure is that you feel confident
that the code will pass an IP review successfully so the code can
become EPL-ed. Also, you will need to get an employer committer
consent form completed. Please see section 5.2 of the following link:
http://www.eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/new-committer.php
If thats all good then we can move on to a vote for inclusion. I see
you can download the code from your website. Are there any sample
applications or snippets that show the widgets?

Those
widgets look great! The gantt chart
in particular would be a very welcome addition to my own applications.
I would
love to see them as part of Nebula.
My
understanding of the process (such as
it is) is that you would need to re-license the code and resources for
the
widgets under EPL and show that you have full copyrights over them. I
believe
that you will need to certify that the work is yours and possibly get a
statement of release from any employers that might have claim to the
code.
Once that is cleared up, the code can be migrated to the Eclipse CVS
servers,
and the Nebula homepage can get some content added.
Nebula is
organized somewhat like its
namesake astronomical phenomenon – which is to say, hardly at all.
Widget contributors generally maintain their own code, unless they find
someone
else who agrees to take over. Keep in mind that there is really no
"project
team" for Nebula, but just a loosely associated bunch of folks, working
on their own stuff.
I hope to
see your code up on eclipse.org
soon!
