Usual non-commital/busy response to your suggestion of doing this myself, I'm afraid; I'd like to give it a try some day if I get some time (I'm not really a programmer), but please don't hold your breath (I wonder how many times you hear that !). Apologies.

The short term the workaround involves HAProxy in front,  which is there irrespective, so no problem.
