Hi Cedric
I thought I had replied, but seems not. I guess I was refraining
from being too negative.
IMHO A good icon should ideally immediately say Model/Modeling
without prompting.
Failing that an icon should be memorable as Model/Modeling once the
icon has been explained as Modeling
I have not seen anything that satisfies the immediately obvious
criterion. The jigsaw world icon is plausible against the lesser
criterion.
On first viewing I found none of your suggestions as good as the
jigsaw world.
On reviewing, the origami seems possible, so I've rescaled all of
them to 32x32 and 16x16. The origami colours might be reviewed but
the contrast should be suitable for judgement.
Surprisingly the crescent survives as better than a smudge. I find
the jigsaw at 16x16 is still a jigsaw, whereas the origami is not.
So I vote for crescent-jigsaw at 32x32 and greater, omitting the
crescent at 16x16.

I had not a single feedback so far (I

These are just some exploratory logos done very quickly, don't
feel shy about putting them down !
I am mostly interested in other areas which you would think
interesting to explore.
I attached the file in the mail this time has I have no clue
what the retention policy of imgur is.

Hi Cedric,
thanks for your thoughts. I guess I understand your point.
I also agree with your list of the most important properties
of the modeling project.
But a logo just can't transport this meaning. It is a common
misunderstanding that it is the purpose of logos to
transport meaning.
Indeed I agree these are very abstract things, and you are
right, recognition and identification should prevail.
A logo has primarily to
ensure recognition and identification.
And second it may visually connect to something meaningful.
The proposed logo definitely does this job. It is simple and
as thus recognizable and it clearly relates to Eclipse (at
least the commonly preferred one with the crescent).
It clearly relates to Eclipse, but I would say that its
relationship to modeling is recognizable. Any top-level project
(Modeling, Technology, Tools...) is some kind of collection of
projects which are fitting together, this logo could also work
for any of these projects.
Furthermore the puzzle
indicates that the project is the umbrella of closely
related sub projects that interact.
I guess the puzzle is a common metaphor for that and is in
no way associated with 'game' and 'childness' while the
roundness is easily understood as being due to the curvature
of the ball.
It is slightly different, but the EMF logo itself for instance :
https://www.eclipse.org/modeling/emf/images/emf_logo.png
is close to this "puzzle" idea while looking sharp. It is more
recognizable and is nicer than the current eclipse modeling logo
in low resolution and that's why I picked this one for the
modeling package so far (https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/)
And last not least it's
style is recognized as being up to date.
Definitely ! And again I am aware criticism is easy and I'd
really like to have this initiative succeed as our branding is
outdated now. But on the other end, I need to be confident in
adopting the branding in the Modeling Package that the first
impression -- and branding matters a lot then -- is positive for
most (if not all) users.
Here are a few sketches made for exploration, I can't say those
are a huge success in conveying what I envisionned. That being
said the "M" is present in #1 to #8 and helps in recognizing
"modeling" vs "the rest of the world".
No work has been done on the typeface whatesoever, so don't
even bother mentioning it ;)

So I would say the proposed logo in an excellent way
fulfills the requirements.

good initiative ! Now a few
comments :
AFAIU this concept is about presenting Modeling as a
collection of pieces which are working together, which it
is - indeed - yet this is true of pretty much any top
level project.
The jigsaw puzzle concepts convey the ideas of childness
and games (especially with such roundness). I would not
say this is the thing I want people to think when looking
at Eclipse Modeling.
What impression do we want to give ? My top ones ordered
by most important to less important would be :
1°) the foundations for building your own greater things
2°) maturity, reliability
3°) pieces of technologies working together
4°) it's related to Eclipse
Don't you agree with this list ? If I get to pick a single
one, I would rather have people understand the
"foundation" thing than the fact that it's components
working together.
That being said there is real work and involvement in
these proposals already and criticisms is always easy.
I'll try to get a few more concept sketches proposals
today to argue my point.

Hi,
A friend of mine in Berlin is a graphic designer and I was
thinking, given we have a nice new Eclipse logo, maybe
it's time to update the modeling project's logo as well.
What do you folks think of these?
Of course we'll need board approval for derivatives of
the Eclipse logo, but I thought I'd collect opinions
about it first.

Ed
