Hi, Ed,
Thanks.
I understand that you're not a lawyer ... and so does the EMO's IP team :-D They have requested that the Orbit committers validate their resolutions to these problems with their PMCs, and if the PMCs feel uncomfortable about anything, they should contact emo-ip-team@xxxxxxxxxxx with their questions. Basically, once the issues have been identified, the EMO is confident that the PMCs collectively can use good judgment to ensure satisfactory resolutions.
I would particularly like to hear from Rich, as it is his GMF project that is the primary re-distributor of these Batik bundles.
Thanks again!
Christian

Hello, my PMC,
As the maintainer of the Orbit bundling of Apache Batik, which is used by GMF and perhaps other Modeling projects, I need your review (and hopefully approval) of my resolution of issues raised by the EMO's review of the about-files.
Below, I include an excerpt from the EMO's report to the Orbit project, indicating the issues found in the Batik bundles. Note that I have attempted to address these issues in the org.w3c.* bundles, also, which the EMO has not yet reviewed. Item 28 pertains to the PDF Transcoder, which is maintained by the TPTP project.
The resolutions that I have released into the next Orbit build are as follows:
For references to W3C content indicated in the NOTICE file (items 27, 29, and 30 in the report)
- added missing README, LICENSE.dom-software.txt, and LICENSE.sax.txt files from the Apache Batik distribution to the about_files/ folders where needed to provide the licenses referenced by the NOTICE file
- added license information for DOM and SAX, where absent, to the about.html files
So, the resolution was to add (to the best of my ability) accurate licensing information to the about_files/ and about.html, that was missing.
For references to ISO content indicated in the NOTICE file (items 27, 29, and 30 in the report)
I did not add license information about the International Organisation for Standardization code to the about.html files because that code is only included in Batik's documentation package, which is not included in these Orbit bundles.
So, the resolution is to do nothing, but to explain why the attribution of ISO code is not required.
Regarding the absence of the PDF Transcoder from the "transcoder" bundle (item 30 in the report)
To answer the reviewer's question in item (30) about why does the org.apache.batik.transcoder bundle call itself "Transcoder" but in the about.html file say that it does not include the PDF Transcoder: this bundle provides an API for transforming SVG images to other formats ("transcoding"), including transcoders for a selection of popular internet raster image formats. This bundle simply doesn't, for a variety of reasons, include the transcoder for PDF which is provided separately by the Apache FOP project and which was included in the Apache Batik 1.6 distribution.
Please let me know, as soon as possible, whether the Modeling PMC deems these changes to satisfactorily attribute the third-party code in the Apache Batik bundles to their owners, and the terms under which the code in these bundles is licensed. I will be happy to make any further changes that may be required.
Thanks,
Christian

Subject: [orbit-dev] More fixes needed for IP related documentation
Reply-To: Orbit Developer discussion <orbit-dev@xxxxxxxxxxx>
Orbiteers, please see this bug (and below) for some initial review of our about.html files, etc.
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=234485
Offhand, it seems to me there is a lot of work to do by June 2nd! (well, ideally by then, so our final S build is real close to what will be our R build for Ganymede.
There is too much for me to open a bug for each person who needs to make fixes .. so, please open your own, for any bundles you are responsible for.
This includes those listed in these review notes, but suspect we can proactively make many fixes based on the patterns seen in this list.
After you open your bug, please list is as a blocks (depends-on) for bug 234485 so we can easily see progress being made.
Thanks,

Remaining schedule:
June 2 - promote latest S-build to 'downloads'
After June 2nd, we'd start to produce R builds on 'committers' site,
and promote it as the final Ganymede orbit build on ...
June 9 - promote latest R-build to 'downloads' (and a day or two
later, remove all the S-builds).

Below is an rtf version of what is in the bug. I've included it here, since easier to read, if the rtf survives your mail reader.

I am working through the Orbit About files as they appear in alphabetical order. I estimate I am approximately 50% complete: this preliminary feedback is on files up to and including org.apache.batik; will continue in alphabetical order from org.apache.bcel. I thought I’d give you some preliminary feedback so you can work on these items while I review the remainder of the files.
Please feel free to call if I haven’t been clear in some spots. Thanks!

a. contain about files that state, among other things,
Batik is a subset of the original distribution available from the Apache Software Foundation and does NOT include:
· Rhino

· PDF Transcoder
Yet, it would appear that this package is “Transcoder”….?
b. In addition both files have NOTICE files that state that the package includes:
