I had turned on the digest mode for the mailing list and there is no
way (that I can find) to reply to individual messages?!?! :( I bet
this is going screw up threading. Sorry.

In the end I figured out what the problem is.
I had a file ~/workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.m2e.core/lifecycle-mapping-metadata.xml
when deleted the problem went away. Don't know where this file came
from, although I did initially create my workspace in Eclipse-Juno,
and did not change anything when I upgraded to Eclipse-Kepler.
