You are correct it was not in the initial charter and that is why it is not in the new charter. As I mentioned previous, we have been inviting Associate members who have a direct link and interest in the Eclipse IoT WG to join. I don’t see this changing.

It is unfortunate this point was not noticed during the discussion period. I don’t see this issue being serious enough to require a new vote. There has also been broad-based support for the new charter and one -1 regarding this issue.

The good news is that we will now have an engaged Steering Committee and so it will be easier to request and gain approval for charter changes. FWIW, a super-majority of the Steering Committee is required to change the charter. Therefore, I would suggest the Steering Committee is asked to consider adding clarification about the participation of Associate members. This can be done once the new SC is operational.

I hope this is a satisfactory solution for this issue.

Ian

Good point Ian, I guess nobody every really looked closely at the original charter (including myself)...

Kai,

I don't see any mention of Associate members in the original charter either, unless I've missed something.  This doesn't change the need to be clear in the new charter, but I am wondering if the policy has actually changed.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the feedback. If it wasn’t on purpose to exclude Associate members then you might want to think about changing the section about the „Participation Guidelines - Membership“:

Member participants are required to:

·        Be an Eclipse Foundation member at Strategic, Enterprise or Solution level.

Or did I misinterpret this statement?

Kai,

Good point about the Associate members. I don’t see any reason to expel OpenHab Foundation or any of the existing Associate members. In the past, specific Associate members have been invited to join and I see that continuing.

All,

I will abstain from voting as the new charter actually means that associate members like the openHAB Foundation are going to be expelled from the iot-wg - hence it would feel weird to me to give a +1 here.

The decision is fine for me though, if this helps keeping the iot-wg focused and effective in its actions, so no worries.

Best regards,

All,

We are now in a position to vote on the final version of the charter. Each member company is asked to vote +1, 0 or -1. To vote, please respond to this email thread.  We will use a lazy consensus to determine the final results. The voting will end May 12 at 5pmPST. If you vote -1, it would be appreciated if you give a reason.

Thank you again for all the feedback and comments on the draft charter.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Subject: [iot-wg] Process to finalize new IoT Working Group charter

All,

As discussed, we are in the process to update the IoT Working Group charter.  At the last phone call, I took the action item to document a process for finalizing the new charter.   Therefore, I would like to proposed the following:

1.      We collect feedback and comments on the revised charter until May 5. Thanks to all who have already provided comments.  You can see the current draft at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y-_jF2LqrEvS1EqgdQk2Rgf8FtywVSz8oWQiROL8LvE/edit?usp=sharing

2.      After the comments are closed, I will create a final draft and post it on this mailing list. This will be done before May 10.

3.      We will then conduct a lazy consensus vote of the working group. Each member company will be asked to vote, +1, -1 or 0. If there are no objections by May 12, the charter will be considered final. If you do have an objection, I am hoping/expecting you will have raised that objection before the vote. J

Regards

Ian
